Pet Crazy
I don't know if I've discussed this before, but a friend of mine says that it's not normal to sing to your pets. He talks to his, but he doesn't sing to them or make jokes to them. I carry on conversations with mine, especially since my wife has been out of town. They expect it. They talk to me and I talk to them. No big deal. But I've always sung to my pets, too. I thought everybody did. Don't you sing to your pets?
When I was a kid I always heard "music soothes the savage beast". I have a horrible voice, but I still sing to them. Granted, they don't sing back, but they seem to enjoy me singing. I make up songs for them. They aren't big on hip hop, but have a more eclectic taste which is a good thing since I mix most genre. I've been doing this for years obviously proving I'm a nut. I generally sing original lyrics with tunes reminiscent of songs I've heard over the years. One of our favorites has a tune similar to Dr. Hook's On the Cover of Rolling Stone and the lyrics are:
My name is Lily
I'm a real hillbilly
and I gotta big brother named Cole
We gotta dog
what lives in a log
tough as an ole shoe sole
I gotta a sister named Daisy
who's a little bit crazy
and Violet is my sister, too
They climb trees
and jump in the breeze
from the wings of a bird that flew
(Chorus)
Bird that flew
Got away!
Made me blue
I cried all day!
But if it comes back
I'll give it a whack
and show it just how I play.
Okay, so what. I'm crazy and I don't care. Actually, life is a whole lot easier when you just go ahead and admit you sing to and carry on conversations with your pets.
"It's eleven o'clock! I'm not making you cinnamon toast!"
"He's so big he's scratchin' the cardboard, scratchin' the cardboard! He's so big he's scratchin' the cardboard, scratchin' the cardboard!"
