The Local Wildlife

One of the great things about living in a rural area is getting to see a variety of wildlife.  You never know what is going to be crawling, walking or flying by (and in some cases coming into the house).  Over the years the cats have brought in mice, voles, frogs, lizards, garter snakes, grass snakes and chicken snakes.  Most of the time their batteries are so run down that the are fairly easy to catch and set on their way.  Here are a few of our more welcome guests.

"My name is Indigo Bunting. You ate my bird seed. Prepare to die."

I've only seen this one, but on a daily basis.  Moments after I took this photo (which was through the window glass) a Gold Finch flew up to the feeder.  Unfortunately the shot I got of him was less than stellar.  We have a wide variety of birds that come to the feeder and it's worth the price of bird seed to see the array of colors and sizes.

Another thing we have quite a number of is Eastern box turtles.  Some time back I started taking photos of them so that I could see how many different ones were coming through.  Here are a few of them.

The turtle above is a small male that has had an injury to its shell.  You can't tell from this picture, but there is a healed crack on the back side.

This is a small female.  You can tell by the plastron (underside of the shell) not having an indention for mating.

This is a very large male, about 25 years old.

This guy actually ran across the yard one July afternoon and went for the blackberries.  Notice his red mouth.

This little hatchling had just come from the nest when I found him.

This Gray Fox wandered through the side yard late one afternoon...

...jumped the ditch...

...and crossed the hill toward the woods.

This is a baby coon that spotted Lily near some food.  For whatever reason, it decided to test out its badness and charge Lily.

Lily, never one to take any mess off uninvited guests, stopped the little coon in its tracks.

Of course I would prefer the cats not have contact with the wildlife, but what are you gonna do?
